What is Online Dispute Resolution (ODR)?

Colm Brannigan has been involved in ODR since the early 2000’s and is the author of a chapter on ODR in the CCH ADR Practice Manual and other articles on the topic that are in in the resources (articles) section of this website. ODR is an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process using technology as a platform for communication and information exchange. ODR is similar to in-person ADR, although not exactly the same and you should look for experienced practitioners to provide these services as the techniques used vary due to the characteristics of the electronic environment. ODR is sometimes called a virtual process as in virtual mediation or virtual arbitration and often uses video conference platforms such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams. There are also dedicated ODR platforms some of which are fully automated processes.

We use Zoom and the Microsoft Teams platform to provide ODR services in:

  • Mediation
  • Med-Arb
  • Arbitration
  • Training

Why we use Zoom for ODR

  • ODR presents opportunities for resolving disputes across distances without the costs of moving people or documents around. It allows dispute resolution and technical expertise to be used anywhere.
  • Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) can be used in any type of dispute.
  • While we are experienced with various other platforms our preferred platform for ODR services is Zoom as it is easy to use and works well.
  • Participants are familiar with Zoom and do not have to set up an account to use it.
  • Zoom works on computers, tablets, and cell phones.

In a world where we spend much of our time online with day-to-day tasks, it makes sense to resolve our disputes the same way.
